What is hair Balayage?
Balayage is called highlighting the hair shaft and is therefore a type of highlight. In this way, you can experience the beauty of lightening without worrying about damaging the hair roots. Doing Balayage is like painting and usually not everyone can do it well.
The creativity and experience of the hairdresser can have a great impact on the beauty of hair color. Balayage is suitable for short, long, straight, very curly, wavy and dyed hair. In this method, unlike the old methods, there is no need to repair the hair color quickly because the hair is highlighted irregularly, unlike the highlight with foil, which lightens the hair linearly and regularly, and the hair roots are dark and do not need to be repaired.
Balayage has many techniques, we will go through one of the simplest methods of Balayage in this article.
Comparing Balayage with other methods
In this method, the hair has a more natural appearance than the old methods. Also, with Balayage, in general, the hair roots are not damaged because they do not high lightened. In this method, the hair roots are dark and the stems are light. With normal hair growth, your hair does not look bad and there is no need to repair de-coloration.
Differences between Balayage and highlights
In the hair highlighting method, the hairdresser follows a structure and highlights parts of the hair that all have specific rules, but this is not the case in Balayage and there are no rules and regulations.
Your hairdresser has more freedom in Balayage, but not in the case of highlights. This means that you can Balayage a lot of hair, so Balayage hair is more even than highlighted hair.
Another difference between Balayage and highlight is that in highlight, the marked parts of the hair are dyed from the root to the end, but in Balayage, the middle part of the hair is lightened up to the tip. On the other hand, Balayage looks a little more natural, because the difference between the color of Balayage and hair color is not as much as it is between highlight color and hair color.
As we said in Balayage, the hair is not dyed from the roots and therefore you do not need to take root. But in the highlight, you have to do this once in a while.
Differences between Balayage and Ombre
The most common difference between Ombre and Balayage is that in the lower Balayage method, the hair is lightened with decoloration and the strands are highlighted in the side of the hair up to near the roots. But in the Ombre method, only the bottom of the hair is lightened.
In the Ombre method, part of your hair is dark and the other half is light, and the line between dark and light is completely blurred. The closer the hair is to the tip, the lighter it is, and the closer it gets to the roots, the darker it will be.
But in the case of Balayage, the light parts of the hair must be selected by the hairdresser with high precision and skill and apply the desired color on them as a light shade.
In the Balayage method, part of the whole hair is never dyed. Some highlighted areas are quite selective, which is a bit like highlighting.
Who is Balayage suitable for?
One of the best options for Balayage is people who suffer from white hair because Balayage can completely cover your white hair.
Also, those who want to choose their hair color completely freely and even apply dark and light parts on the hair according to their taste, it is better to use the Balayage method.
Balayage looks more natural on hair that is shoulder length or longer.

Hair Balayage tutorial
Ingredients for hair Balayage
- Decoloration powder
- Hair color bowl
- Hair color brush
Hair Balayage Step By Step
To Balayage hair, you must first combine decoloration powder or the desired dye with oxidant.
Divide the whole hair to do the Balayage
Separate triangular or horizontal layers from behind; This means that the roots are wider and the bottom of the hair is stuck together, and the total amount of this division will be according to your taste.
Hair dye or decoloration
Hold the split ends of the hair in an oblique position in your hand and apply the brush irregularly on the hair so that the mixture be scattered on your hair. Keep in mind is not to apply the dye to the hair at the roots and about 3 to 4 inches from the roots.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that the ends of your hair are completely coated with color.
In the next step, select another strand of hair in the opposite direction from the previous strand of hair and dye it in the same way. Make sure that the dyes completely fade into each other and that there is no boundary between dark and light.
Dyeing the front hair
Use the previous method for the front of your hair. The only difference is that the distance to the root of the hair is completely according to your taste.
A few key points
- You can also choose which hair strand to dye.
- You can massage the colors on your hair with your hands to spread and fade dark and light colors.
- You can also use foil for the lower parts of the hair.
Hair division for Balayage
To do hair Balayage, you must first divide the hair properly. To do this, first separate a piece of hair diagonally from the side of the ear to the end of the neckline.
Then from the other side of the head, from the side of the ear, make a straight line to the other side; To divide the hair from the front of the head according to the difference of the customer’s head, separate two pieces of hair diagonally to the side of the ear as shown below and finally divide the remaining part in the center of the head into four equal parts.
This Balayage splitting is a common method. Be careful not to dye your hair regularly while doing the Balayage. Do this in a messy and irregular way.
Linear Balayage or highlight without special cap is one of the techniques of hair Balayage. Divide the hair in a linear light, then separate each strand with a narrow ponytail and hair foil as shown below, decolorate or dye.
Important points in linear Balayage
On normal hair, apply the Balayage in free and straight lines, but if you want to repair and eradicate the previous Balayage, reapply the decoloration material to the previous lines.
Foil, cellophane and cotton can be used to separate the different layers. In some cases, we do not put a layer between the lights and we do the Balayage dry.
To do a linear Balayage, the material must be thick (like as yogurt or gypsum mortar). First, place the material on the bleach board, then brush the hair.
If decoloration leakage is difficult to control, you can use decoloration glue to thicken the material and not spill on the hair. You can also use decoloration material to leak around or under the layers.
Hair Balayage Aftercare
One of the most important steps after Balayage is to use shampoos and conditioners for dyed hair.
Also consider strengthening your hair and using natural masks for your hair.
Do not forget to not expose your hair to chlorinated water and ultraviolet rays after Balayage.
Do not use overly hot hair styling methods such as hair straighteners or hair dryers. Because in these conditions, the sensitivity and vulnerability of your hair increases.
After Balayage, dry hair is a common occurrence and the only solution to this problem is to hydrate the hair with suitable conditioners, but try it with natural ingredients such as; Combine mayonnaise, honey, olive oil, almond oil, aloe vera gel and more.
Hair dyeing and repair
As we explained, the hair follicles are dark at the roots, so when your hair grows, there is no difference in color or impurities in your hair, and there is no need to re-repair the hair.
But if you want to repair and re-dye, you should know that hair re-dye is a weak state of hair dye that does not damage the hair and is mostly used for decoloration and highlights and Balayage, and in general the damage isn’t compatible with actual hair dye.
The re-dye should stay on the hair for about 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse. Use one degree darker than the original base for painting.
3D lightening of hair shaft by Balayage method
First, divide the client’s hair. One of the easiest ways to split your hair is to use a hair clip. You can split the hair in two and tie each part with a rubber band. If you want the highlight to be close to the roots, pick the tied areas near the hair roots.
Choosing the right ingredients for hair decoloration and hair dye is one of the most important and effective things you need to do. High quality decoloration powder should not get dusted around when poured into the container from a distance of 30 cm.
After making the powder, it should look like dough. The prepared decoloration powder should not foam, the prepared powder should not move when you tilt the container.
Work tools such as the brush you use should be standard. Use a comb-shaped brush to decolorate the underside of the hair. If the tip of the brush is sharpened due to excessive use, it will remove a large concentration of material from the container and due to the high concentration of ammonia material and gas, the hair will be damaged.
When bleaching or high lightening your hair, remove irregular pieces of hair and be careful to do so carefully so that other parts of the hair are not high lightened.
After bleaching the hair and reaching the desired base, rinse the hair, Cover the hair with an extra towel. Do not open hair clips before rinsing.
For hair coloring, you should use 10 volume oxidants.
